Trebinje – Touch of Mediterranean in Herzegovina

Little Bit about History and Monuments
There were many different settlers in the history of Trebinje. First came the Illyrians, then came the Greek, Romans and lastly Slovenians in the 7. century. The empire of Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians left an important mark on the architecture as well. Therefore, there are many places of worship for Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims. The Cathedral of The Blessed Virgin Mary’s Birth is located on the town square. The Cathedral of Transfiguration of Jesus is located in the town park. Finally, the Ottoman’s and Emperor’s mosque are in the old part of the town.
The Old Town and Fort Kastel, which were named by the town’s folks have been built in 1715. The Museum of Hercegovina, the narrow alleys, causeways and gates especially the most famous one Anđelkina where the tv series ”Ranjeni Orao” were shoot make this part of the town authentic and interesting for the tourists.
Emperor Constantine has allegedly built many abbeys including Duži, Zavala, Dobrićevo and Tvrdoš. They serve as a proof for the spirituality and tradition caring in this area.
Different bridges, specifically the Arslanagića or Perovića bridge built by Mehmed-paša Sokolović make the town of Trebinje even more exciting.
The best way to overwatch the breathtaking beauty of Trebinje is the hill Crkvina and plateau of Herzegovinian Gračanica. It is the place where the remains of the poet Jovan Dučić are located. The city granted his wish to rest in peace looking over his favourite town in 2000.
