These specific tombstones are specific for Bosnia and Herzegovina and they are called \u201e<strong>ste\u0107ak<\/strong>\u201c (singular, plural: ste\u0107ci). They are<strong> monumental medieval tombstones<\/strong> and besides Bosnia and Herzegovina, you can find them in border parts of Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Radimlja Necropolis<\/strong> is located in <strong>Vidovo Polje<\/strong> and represents one of the <strong>biggest<\/strong> ste\u0107ak necropoleis in Bosnia and Herzegovina. By the characteristics of the necropolis (number of tombstones, diversity, highly artistic decoration, representation of all the basic shapes) we can say that this one is one of the <strong>richest<\/strong> and most <strong>valuable<\/strong> necropoleis. The <strong>Vlachs<\/strong> that were living in that area created this necropolis. That number was even bigger but some of the tombstones were destroyed in the <strong>Austro-Hungarian<\/strong> period. They were building a road that is going through necropolis and destroyed at least 15-20 tombstones. In that 133 ste\u0107ci (tombstones) you can find 9 different types of them. All of them has a specific characteristic and decoration. Also, excavation has shown that this area was used even before the medieval ages for burying people.<\/p>\n<p>On November 5<sup>th,<\/sup> 2002, the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina decided to proclaim this <strong>historic area<\/strong>, Radimlja Necropolis near Stolac, a <strong>national<\/strong> monument.
