It is one of the main spots the city, a place where everything (and everyone) is intersecting. The\u00a0<strong>square<\/strong>\u00a0will give you a bit different picture of Mostar then the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hit-booker.com\/listings\/old-bridge\/\">Old Bridge<\/a> and older part of the town. City park, gymnasium building, promenade, city hall and government institutions, coffee bars, theatre, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hit-booker.com\/listings\/sniper-tower\/\">street art building<\/a> from where <strong>the amazing view<\/strong> on the whole of Mostar is spreading &#8211; all of that can be found in the close area around the square. Spanish square is only <strong>5-10 minutes<\/strong> of walking distance from the Old Bridge. It&#8217;s a perfect place to take a rest, eat and drink something, or just to sit and <strong>enjoy<\/strong> the sunsets.<\/p>\n<p>The name of the square &#8211; Spanish square, was given to it in 1995. The city of Mostar gave the name in\u00a0honour\u00a0of 21 killed <strong>Spanish troops<\/strong> at <strong>UNPROFOR<\/strong> in the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.<\/p>\n<p>The square is connected with one of the <strong>most beautiful promenades<\/strong> in the city called \u201c<strong>Lenin&#8217;s Promenade<\/strong>\u201c. It got its name in 1945, and before that, it was called \u201c<strong>Stephanie\u2019s promenade<\/strong>\u201c, in honour of Princess Stephanie. She was the wife of Prince Rudolf, son of Austro-Hungarian Emperor Francis Joseph I.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish Square is also connected with the biggest <strong>park<\/strong> in the city called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hit-booker.com\/listings\/veliki-park\/\">Park Zrinjevac.<\/a> All of this makes it the perfect place for tourists to come, take a rest and to enjoy the peace. Besides that, there you will often find\u00a0children&#8217;s laughter, people singing, dancing, skateboarding and doing many other things.<\/p>\n<h3>Beautiful Old Gymnasium building<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The main building\u00a0that is dominating the Spanish square is one called <strong>Gimnazija Mostar<\/strong>. It is also known as <strong>Stara Gimnazija<\/strong> (Old Gymnasium). The construction of this beautiful building was finished in <strong>1902, <\/strong>and it\u00a0was one of the <strong>oldest<\/strong> and most elite schools in<strong> ex Yugoslavia<\/strong>. For a long time, it carried a name after a most famous <strong>poet<\/strong> in Mostar history &#8211; <strong>Aleksa \u0160anti\u0107<\/strong> but nowadays is referred to as <strong>Old Gymnasium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This building was built in <strong>Moorish Revival<\/strong> architectural style also known as <strong>Neo-Moorish style<\/strong>. It has many decorations inspired by the Alhambra palace in Spain. Today, it is also listed as one of the <strong>national monuments<\/strong> so make sure to check it out.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Gymnasium building is surely a great sight to see.
