The so-called sunny town with an average of 2291 solar hours a year, Mostar is the sunniest city in the country. The snow is relatively rare and it melts within a few hours or days. During summer July is the hottest month with an average of 40°C (and temperatures above 40°C are not uncommon!)
With that being said, we shall start off our guide that will be based on what to do, what to bring, and most importantly, how to survive the heat!
Before we hop on a trip to this lovely city, we shall see what are the top 5 things to bring when traveling in Mostar!
Even if the sun is burning hot in the city, and the humidity sometimes bothers us, the town is full of content and entertainment. It’s burning hot, but thanks to the refreshing rivers, offers, fun and enjoyment, the guests of our city enjoy visiting right in this period!
Sun hat
One of the most important items in terms of surviving the heat and enjoying time spent in Mostar is a sun hat! As weird as it may sound to some, in summer holidays sun hats are a MUST in Mostar, because the heat is so strong it causes tiredness, burnt skin and for some even feinting!
Don’t worry, it’s not that common to faint, but it is common to feel really tired and smothered because of the heat.
Try not to spend too much time in the sun during 03:00 and 04:00 pm, which is the hottest period!
Water
Just as important as the sun hat, water is also a MUST. You easily dehydrate and you will always be on the run for water. Bring a few bottles with you when walking outside in the daytime, so the sun doesn’t leave you feeling drained of energy!
Backpack
Wherever you travel the backpack is always needed. Of course, the backpack MUST have an insulated cooler interior to keep your beverages and food cold for long periods of time. Let’s face it, nobody wants to consume warm water and food!
Sun cream
Just like when you go swimming, you must apply sun cream on your skin while in Mostar. This town is often windy, and when the sun burns your skin, the wind covers the heat so you don’t feel any burn at all! To avoid unnecessary sunburn, bring a sun cream with you!
Keep your home cool
Home temperature of 25C is enough to keep it cool and nice, since the outside temperature rises up to 40C! Keep it cool and simple, and be aware not to make it too cold at home, so you don’t feel the shock from the heat outside.
With all of the above being said, let’s discover what Mostar has to offer!
DOWNLOAD THE CITY GUIDE MOSTAR APP
To a tourist, getting your head around Mostar can be confusing. You can easily get lost and confused in the city. This nifty little app has all the information you need about specific locations, restaurants you want to visit and similar. It uses GPS to get you from A to B with ease. It is a very useful app and we recommend it for everyone!
THE OLD BRIDGE
Right off the bat, we start at this beautiful attraction which is visited by many tourists. Everybody knows about it, but do you know about the stories connected with this bridge?
It was built in 1566 by order of Sultan Suleiman with the simple goal of connecting the two sides. It cannot be tied to any style or period in architecture. The design of the bridge was only influenced by the morphology of the place and its surroundings.
And that is exactly why it is unique in the world!
One of the legends connected with the bridge is that it was designed by mimar Hajrudin, Sinan’s student (designer of the Višegrad Bridge and Karadjoz Bey’s Mosque in Mostar)
According to the legend, Hajrudin never saw the bridge completed. Sultan Suleiman said he would kill him if the bridge collapsed. Hajrudin escaped before the end of construction.
SKYWALK MOSTAR
Skywalk is a new attraction in Mostar on Fortica Hill. This is the first glass lookout in BiH. It is a glass path 35m long and 15m high. Those who are afraid will be a challenge! It is worth it to walk on it, the view of the complete city is amazing. With the skywalk on Fortica you can try the zipline (for those who love a challenge), the suspension bridge or simply have a coffee in the garden of the mountain lodge with an amazing view.
MOSTAR HALF MARATHON
The Mostar Half marathon is an event that is warmly recommended to all runners. The organizers rightly call it the “Mostar Postcard”.
Run over 6 bridges, 8 times, do you need to add anything more to this.
You will run along the Neretva, enjoy its green color and its waterfalls. You will also find yourself in the narrow streets, to get to know the parts of the city created during the Turkish rule. What will especially impress you is the energy of the city, the support of citizens of all ages! While running, you will explore the city, see the beauties of this wonderful town and feel the experience like never before!
Mostar half marathon is being held every year in organization with the association Healthy Life – KINEZIS. Although primarily a sports event, it also covers the areas of education (organization of professional conferences), tourism (participants come from more than 20 countries), culture (race route passes by the cultural sights of the city) and thus stands out as an interdisciplinary and socially responsible project.
