Mogorjelo – a place full of history
Mogorjelo is a village near the city of Čapljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. What makes it so special is archeological site – a Roman villa rustica. This beautiful Roman site dates from the early 4th century and it is one of the most beautiful buildings of late antique architecture throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. The area is protected by the state as a national monument.
Mogorjelo is full of history. Archaeological excavations have proven that on this site Romans had settlements even in the 1st century. After it was destroyed, a new Roman state-owned estate was constructed over the ruins with a villa too. It probably had the task of supplying a nearby city called Narona. Afterward, in 5th-century people built two early Christian basilicas using the walls of the original fortress.
Mogorjelo is proof that Herzegovina is a fertile land. Even old Romans recognized this area as fertile soil for the cultivation of the most famous Mediterranean elixir – olives. Since then, the tradition of olive growing has been maintained in Mogorjelo.
Horse riding club
Today, Mogorjelo is offering a lot more than just history. The most attractive thing for is a horse riding club called “Vranac”, that was founded in 2004 and interests many people. The club is offering the possibility of the riding school for beginners as well as the possibility of recreational riding for professionals.
Besides that, you can enjoy in beautiful nature, a lot of greenery and beautiful lanes that are illuminated. There is also a restaurant called Villa Rustica which will offer you local specialties, traditional food for this area.
